Accentuate
Accentuate aims to use the inspiration provided by the International Paralympic Movement, with its origins in South East England, to tackle disadvantage, raise aspirations and celebrate excellence.
There are five objectives:
- That every young disabled person in the South East has the opportunity to create, compete or collaborate with a young person in another competitor country during period 2008/2012.
- That the South East becomes the most welcoming and accessible region for disabled people in the UK.
- That the South East region is recognised as a lead region in the UK for disability and deaf cultural activity and as an international centre of excellence.
- That the South East's role as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement at Stoke Mandeville is recognised by the world and that it's historic archive and the individual histories of Paralympian athletes alongside the impact of the movement itself is explored by artists, and young people in the South East.
- That people across the South East have raised awareness of and are inspired by the values of personal best, going for gold and excellence and are offered strategies to help them to adopt these values in their own lives.
Tourism South East has secured Accentuate funding to deliver a series of subsidised Destination Access Audits (link to be added), mini audits, bespoke access workshops and Welcome All courses across the South East over the next four years.
The Disabled British Open Golf is a fully inclusive national golfing event open to any golfer with a disability. It brings together several National Governing Bodies for Golf, working to deliver a high quality event. The event is a project supported through the Accentuate programme and delivered through Tourism South East. Following the success of the event in 2009, the event was held in 2010 and 2011 at the East Sussex National in Uckfield. Full details of the event can be found in the Disabled British Open Annual Report 2010. Please contact us to obtain a copy.
"The Disabled British Open Golf Championships is a fantastic example of how Britain can stage a world-class event for disabled athletes competing at the highest level. As a nation we should be very proud of the awareness this event has created, and the legacy of opportunities within sport for disabled people." Jeremy Hunt MP

For the first time in 2011 a pan disability junior event was held alongside the Disabled British Open.
